About The Cock House
Borehole Water!
A historical cornerstone, a local ledgendary landmark, and a national monument. These are some of the many phrases used to describe the historical Cock House that still stands majestically in Makhanda (Grahamstown).
The Cock House continues to offer a selection of comfortable self catering accommodations and guests are known to make return visits. Guests can choose to stay in interior designed rm’s 1-4 ( 3 queen rooms & 1 twin, ) Each of these rooms has air con, heating, microwave , toaster, coffee & tea station, smart TV, fan, electric blanket, or you can opt for one of our spacious 2 bed family units ( also suitable for small groups ) which can accommodate 5-7 persons, depending on preference. These have a Kitchen with four plate cooker / oven, microwave, fridge freezer, toaster, coffee and tea facilities, sitting room with dining table, sofa, coffee table smart tv. The bedrooms have ceiling fans for hot summer nights. The bathrooms each have a bath and a shower. We also have two other units which sleep 2 to 3 persons ( all self catering ) slightly more basic, but spacious and comfortable for a short break away. Off street Parking is not an issue – we have approximately 20 private car parking spaces.

We have an on site Guards who can open up the car park gate and check you in. Location wise we are very close to a shopping centre, taxi rank nearby, the N2 just a few minutes drive. The CBD / High street is just 500 m distance. Rhodes University is a 5 min drive.
Presidential guests!
Although we no longer have a fine dining restaurant, since opening in 1991, many illustrious guests have returned to The Cock House, including President Nelson Mandela on three occasions. President Thabo Mbeki, Tony Leon (leader of the opposition party 1999-2007), and a host of other dignitaries have also stayed at The Cock House. Linking the Garden Route and the Wild Coast, a two to three night stay is recommended to enjoy Frontier Country, the Sunshine Coast and nearby game reserves such as Addo Elephant National Park, Pumba and Shamwari offer malaria free big four viewing, then there’s fabulous fishing, outstanding array of hunting offerings if that’s your thing, mountain bike treks, and walking trails are all within striking distance. Some of the best beaches in the country – Kenton, Kleinemont, Kasouga et al, all approximately 45 min drive. What’s not to do!! Oh, and did we mention Grahamstown ( Makhanda ) has probably more victorian and historical buildings than any town in South Africa and possibly Africa!

Each room has beautifully made beds with clean, white linen. Complimentary sherry is on offer to guests.
Hostess trays with teas and coffees are on offer. Milk is in the fridge. A microwave and fridge is for use by guests to heat food, and make light snacks. Crockery and cutlery are clean and adequate.

Local Attractions
Grahamstown is home to some local attractions, such as the Observatory Museum, the 1820 Settlers Mounument, the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, the Amazwi South African Museum of Literature, the Albany Museum, the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity, the oldest letterbox in South Africa, along with a few more historical landmarks.
